Can Captain Wyvern keep his new marriage of convenience all business–or will it turn into something more?

Captain Charles Wyvern owes a great debt to the man who saved his life–especially since Major Richardson lost his own life in the process. The best way to honor that hero’s dying wish is for Wyvern to escort the man’s grieving fiancée and mother safely to a new cottage home by the sea. But along the way, he learns of another obligation that has fallen on his shoulders: his uncle has died and the captain is now the Earl of Rothwell.

When he and the ladies arrive at his new manor house in Devon, they discover an estate in need of a leader and a gaggle of girls, all wards of the former earl. War the new earl knows; young ladies and properties he does not. Still wishing to provide for the bereaved Lady Sophia Haverly, Charles proposes a marriage of convenience.

Sophie is surprised to find she isn’t opposed to the idea. It will help her care for her betrothed’s elderly mother, and she’s already fallen in love with the wayward girls on the Rothwell estate. This alliance is a chance to repay the captain who has done so much for her care, as well as divert her attention from her grief. When Wyvern returns to his sea commission, she’ll stay behind to oversee his property and wards.

It sounds so simple. Until the stalwart captain is arrested on suspicion of smuggling, and Sophie realizes how much he’s come to mean to her. Now she’ll have to learn to fight, not only for his freedom but also for his love.

Captain Charles Wyvern has grown up on the sea and never felt like anywhere else could be home. He has become serious and can come off as gruff. His world changes when after a serious injury he no longer is captain of his ship, he loses his best friend, and he receives some unexpected family news.

Before Lady Sophia Haverly had her happily ever after snatched away with the loss of her fiancé, she was animated and always looking for the good.

Sophia is young and Charles is older, and sometimes they seem like opposites. However, they are exactly what each other needs.

This felt like a different kind of romance than a lot of the ones I read. I like that the hero and heroine did not instantly fall in love with each other. I also like the age gap which was more realistic during this time, and it worked out perfectly in their relationship.

I absolutely loved Thea, and I really want to know what happens to her when she grows up.

This has been such a great series, and there are so many more characters I want to see again. However, each book can be read as a standalone.

Miss Miranda Bartley is in love with the Honorable Ethan Roderick, their engagement all but official. But as she basks in the success of her London Season, her joy is cut short when Ethan ends their courtship, claiming she is too insensitive. In the wake of her heartbreak, Miranda is dealt yet another blow, one that changes everything. In a harsh twist of fate, she quickly falls from Society darling to servant in her uncle’s home.

Believing he will never see Miranda again, Ethan is shocked when he encounters her by accident. Even more surprising is her dramatic change; she is no longer the self-centered young woman he left behind. Her eyes are now open to the plight of poverty surrounding her, and Miranda has become every bit the lady Ethan once imagined her to be. As he helps the woman he once loved, their tattered relationship returns to familiarity. But Ethan is determined to protect his heart and begins a courtship with his neighbor, who is predictable and safe everything Miranda is not. Forced to perform a delicate dance, Miranda and Ethan must choose follow the rules of Society or the longing of their hearts.

Refining the Debutante instantly pulled me right in, and I didn’t want to put the book down. If I didn’t have responsibilities, I would have wanted to read this in one sitting.

Miranda is young, naïve, and shallow, and Ethan makes sure she will never forget it. While overall Ethan is an outstanding guy with a good heart, he is of course not perfect. I didn’t like that Ethan thought of himself as so much better than his charity cases. He also cared about other people’s opinions too much yet judged others.

I found this more to be Miranda’s story. She learned and grew so much throughout her experiences. So much was put on her as having all the problems when everyone struggles with something.

I loved Miranda and Ethan from the very beginning. I had already felt so invested in their relationship from the very first chapters and felt somewhat protective of it.

This was a beautiful story about relationships, growth, and of course love.

The last thing Dannie needs is a Victorian gentleman on her ranch, playing cowboy while she’s trying to save her family’s livelihood. Will high stakes and high emotions lead to heartbreak?

Evan Rounsevell, second son to the Marquess of Rothwell, is running as far from his family and responsibilities as he can. His fascination with cowboys takes him from English shores to the Arizona desert, but the days of showdowns are over, and Tombstone, Arizona, is a respectable town. With no funds left, and no desire to call on his affluent family for rescue, Evan seeks a position as a cowboy at a ranch on its last leg.

Daniella Bolton’s fiancé left when the drought of 1893 crippled the KB ranch, but that’s just fine by her. She doesn’t need a man to help her save her family’s land. Especially not an Englishman who looks down on her style of living, like Evan does. She loves her life on the ranch, and no outsider could ever understand what it means to be loyal to the land and her family’s way of life.

Being a cowboy is harder than Evan thought, but as he works to earn his place on the ranch, his heart opens up to the beauty of the desert… as well as that of Dannie Bolton. Watching Evan fight for the ranch she loves makes Dannie realize that not all men are afraid of hard work and troubled times, and loving Evan might be just the salve her wounded heart needs. But when Evan’s family summons him home right when Dannie needs him most, the feelings of betrayal from her former fiancé’s flight return tenfold.

Does Evan dare risk his tenuous relationship with Dannie to fulfill his family responsibilities? Or will leaving Arizona be the worst mistake of his life?

This book has a likeable cast of characters, a unique plot, and it combines some of my favorite time periods and locations.

As the younger son of a Marquess in England, Evan Rounsevell doesn’t have a lot of focus in life. However, he does dream about life in the wild west of America.

Daniella Bolton has been burned before in love and now only wants to work hard at her family’s ranch and ignore the handsome British greenhorn.

Evan gets judged instantly for his upbringing, but he is a hard worker and a fast learner. Dannie bothered me at first with how rude she was to him, and it took a little longer to warm up to her.

I really liked the theme that in America you could choose what to make of yourself instead of just taking the path that was handed to you. This was especially the case for Evan where he wouldn’t have been given a lot of choices if he stayed in England.

I like reading Historical Westerns. I do wish there were a little more historical details added to the story from this time period.

This book, along with many others I have read, and almost every Hallmark movie, seems to think Bostonians think poorly of people from other areas, when Southerners and Westerners are the ones always saying how cold, and heartless Boston people are. Just so you know Hallmark, we like people from all areas, and while the weather may be cold, we aren’t. 🙂

I read the description for the next book in the series, Copper for the Countess, and I am really looking forward to Frosty’s story. He was one of the most intriguing characters in Sliver Dollar Duke.
